Matthew 25 Expands Access to Life-Saving Medications for Steuben County Residents

Angola, IN— Access to affordable health care is a growing challenge for many in our community, especially for neighbors living with chronic conditions and no health insurance. Thanks to the support of the Steuben County Community Foundation, more neighbors in our community received the necessary medications and care needed through Matthew 25’s onsite pharmacy and medication assistance program. Matthew 25 Health and Care is a gospel-inspired health care center that provides high-quality medical, dental, vision, and mental health services at no charge to low-income, uninsured adults in Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio. They’re our region’s only full-service free health care clinic. With rising costs and limited access to affordable health care, this support is often the difference between managing a chronic condition and facing a medical crisis. SCCF’s grant ensured that care remained available for uninsured Steuben County patients.

In the last year, Matthew 25 cared for more than 30,000 patients across Northeast Indiana, with 183 visits being from Steuben County residents. Their wrap-around services extend far beyond basic medical care. Patients received access to dental treatments, vision screenings, mental health counseling, social work services, vaccinations, transportation assistance, and health education. Their pharmacy alone filled 28,564 prescriptions and provided 225 pairs of eyeglasses, making vital care accessible for those who otherwise would go without.

A $6,000 grant from SCCF played a key role in this effort, enabling Matthew 25 to provide life-saving prescriptions to 42 uninsured, low-income individuals from Steuben County. These medications support residents living with chronic conditions that require consistent treatment to prevent emergencies, such as asthma, diabetes, and hypertension.

Matthew 25’s approach focuses on whole-person health. Beyond filling prescriptions, their team offers dietary education, disease management guidance, and preventive care. The impact is measurable: nearly 20% of patients managing high blood pressure improved their readings, and 11% of patients with diabetes saw better blood glucose levels. These improvements help reduce unnecessary strain on local hospitals. In fact, Matthew 25 estimates their services helped prevent at least 59 emergency room visits from Steuben County residents in 2024.

SCCF is honored to invest in partners like Matthew 25 who help ensure that every member of our community can access compassionate, quality health care. Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier Steuben County and creating brighter tomorrows for the people who call it home.
